Atlas: an open map from skills to jobs and courses

The road from where you are to where you want to go, one skill at a time.

At a machine shop bench, an apprentice checks the part she just turned with calipers as her mentor points to the dial.

A job asks for skills. A course teaches them. Too often the learner is left to work out how one leads to the other.

Atlas is an open map in Commons, being built to link each skill to the jobs that need it and the courses that teach it. It is designed to show the road from where someone is to where they want to go, one skill at a time.

What it will do

  • Link skills to jobs. For each skill, the jobs that need it.
  • Link skills to courses. For each skill, the courses that teach it.
  • Lay out the road. The way to a goal, one skill at a time.
  • Stay open. Planned as a public good that anyone can use, check and build on.

The idea behind it

Horizon maps the jobs and Source holds the courses. Skills connect them. When the links between all three are open, anyone can see how a course leads to a job, and anyone can improve that picture. That is the Commons idea: knowledge that belongs to everyone.

How it fits

At Work, the path runs in five steps: see with Horizon, choose with Scout, learn with Liber, prove with Passport, and work with Atlas. In that last step, a worker’s proven skills are meant to meet real openings. Read more on the Commons page.

Where it stands

Atlas is still in development at United Education. It will be released once it is ready, and its turn will show on the release ledger.
