Terms of use

These terms are the agreement between you and United Education when you use our Services. They explain what you can expect from us, what we ask of you, and what happens if something goes wrong.

01The agreement

United Education, PBC (“United Education”, “we”, “us”) provides our websites, apps and learning products (the “Services”). By using the Services, you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Services.

If you use the Services through a school, college, employer or public agency, its agreement with us also applies. Where the two differ, that agreement decides for that use.

02Who can use the Services

  • Anyone can learn with United Education.
  • A child under 13 can use the Services only with a parent’s consent or through a school that has authorized it.
  • A learner between 13 and 18 needs a parent or guardian’s permission, unless the learner uses the Services through a school.
  • A parent or guardian who sets up an account for a child agrees to these terms for the child and is responsible for the child’s use.
  • If you accept these terms for an organization, you confirm you are allowed to do so.

03Your account

Keep your sign-in details private and tell us right away if you think someone else has used your account. Give us accurate information, and keep it up to date. You can close your account at any time from your settings or by writing to us.

04Free to learn

Open courses, the tutor and the tools that come with them are free. If a program has a cost, such as a Certificate, we will tell you the full price clearly before you start, and you will never owe us a debt.

Some programs have their own enrollment agreement. A degree is offered and awarded by the college you enroll in, under that college’s admissions, academic and financial policies.

05Your work

What you create stays yours: your answers, essays, projects and notes. You give us permission to store, process and display your work only as needed to run the Services for you, such as saving your progress or showing your work to a teacher you share it with. This permission ends when you delete your work or your account, except for copies you have already shared with others.

If you choose to share material with everyone, for example a course you publish in Source, you share it under the open license shown when you publish.

06Open content and software

Much of what we build is open. Courses in Source, our open maps and our open software come with their own licenses, shown alongside them. Those licenses decide how you can use, change and share that material.

Everything else in the Services, including our names, logos and designs, belongs to United Education or its licensors. You may not use our names or logos in a way that suggests we endorse you without our written permission.

07Learning with AI

Our tutors and advisors are built to teach well, and they can still make mistakes. Check important facts. Advice from the Services is general educational guidance, not professional medical, legal, financial or mental health advice. For decisions about your health, your money or your rights, talk to a qualified professional.

Where a teacher, school or employer runs your learning, their decisions come first.

08Using the Services fairly

Please use the Services to learn and to help others learn. You agree not to:

  • break the law, or help anyone else do so;
  • harm, harass, threaten or exploit anyone, and above all a child;
  • share content that is hateful, sexual, violent or that you have no right to share;
  • pretend to be someone else, or misrepresent your work or credentials;
  • try to get into accounts, systems or data that are not yours, or disrupt the Services;
  • try to make the tutor produce harmful content, or to get around its safety protections;
  • copy the Services at scale with automated tools, except as an open license allows.

If you see something that puts someone at risk, tell us at safety@unitededucation.org. Crossing Guard brings in a trained person when it matters.

09Changes and ending

We keep improving the Services, so features may change. If we stop offering a feature you rely on, we will try to tell you in advance and help you keep your learning record.

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms or puts others at risk. Unless it would be unsafe or unlawful, we will tell you why and give you a chance to respond. You can download your learning record before an account closes, unless the law prevents it.

10What we promise, and what we cannot

We work hard to keep the Services accurate, available and safe. Even so, they are provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we make no other promises, including that the Services will be free of errors or always available, or that they will lead to a particular result, grade or job.

11Limits on liability

To the extent the law allows, United Education is not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential losses, or for lost data, profits or opportunities, arising from your use of the Services. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the greater of one hundred US dollars or the amount you paid us for the Services in the 12 months before the claim.

Some places do not allow these limits. Where they do not, they apply only as far as the law allows. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer protection law where you live.

12If we disagree

If you have a concern, write to us first at legal@unitededucation.org. Most problems can be solved this way, and we will try to resolve yours within 60 days.

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, without regard to its conflict of law rules. Any dispute that we cannot resolve together will be decided in the state or federal courts located in Delaware, except that either of us may bring a claim in small claims court where you live.

13Changes to these terms

When we change these terms, we will post the new version here and update the date at the top. If a change matters, we will tell you at least 30 days before it takes effect. If you keep using the Services after that, the new terms apply.
