Privacy policy

Your learning belongs to you. This policy explains what we collect when you use United Education, why we collect it, who can see it, how long we keep it, and the choices you have. We wrote it to be read.

01Who we are

United Education, PBC (“United Education”, “we”, “us”) is a Delaware public benefit corporation. Our public benefit is free education for everyone.

This policy covers our websites, apps and learning products, including Liber, Corner, Village, Commons, Labs and Grid (together, the “Services”). When a school, college, employer or public agency gives you access to the Services, it may have its own policy too. Sections 7 and 8 explain how the two fit together.

02The short version

  • We never sell personal information.
  • We show no advertising, use no ad tracking and build no marketing profiles.
  • Your learning record is yours. Nothing moves to a school, an employer or anyone else without your permission, or a parent’s permission for a child.
  • We collect only what we need to teach and support you.
  • A parent or a school is always in control of a child’s information.
  • You can see, download, correct or delete your information at any time.

03What we collect

What you give us. Your name, an email address or phone number, your age or age range (so we can apply the right protections), your language, and the goals you set. What you do as you learn: your answers, your questions to the tutor, and the work you create. Messages you send us. If you apply to a program, the education history and documents you choose to share.

What is created as you learn. Your progress, the skills you have shown, assessment results, and the notes the tutor keeps so it can adapt to you. Together these make up your learning record, which we call Passport.

Your voice. If you learn by speaking, or by phone through Line, we process your voice so the tutor can understand you and answer.

Device and usage information. Your device type, browser and app version, an approximate location based on your IP address (city or region, never precise), the features you use, and error reports. We need this to run the Services and keep them secure.

What others give us. A school, college, employer or agency that gives you access may share basic roster details, such as your name, class and school email. A parent who sets up a child’s account gives us the child’s first name and age. If you sign in with another service, we receive the basic profile details you approve.

What we do not collect. Precise location, biometric identifiers such as face or voice prints, your contacts, or any information for advertising.

04How we use it

  • To teach and support you: to run the tutor, adapt lessons to you, track your progress, give advice, and connect you with mentors and teachers when you choose.
  • To keep you safe: Crossing Guard looks for signs that someone may be at risk of harm and brings in a trained person when it matters.
  • To run and protect the Services: to keep them working, fix problems, and prevent fraud and misuse.
  • To learn what works: we study learning using de-identified or combined data, and we publish what we find. We never publish personal information.
  • To stay in touch: to send messages about your account and your learning, and, if you agree, news about United Education. You can stop news messages at any time.
  • To meet the law: to comply with legal duties and respond to valid legal requests.

AI models. We never use a child’s personal information to train AI models. We never give or sell anyone’s personal information to others to train their models. To improve our own tutors, we use de-identified data, and adults can turn this off in their settings.

05Who can see it

  • People you choose. When you share your Passport with a school, a college or an employer, they see what you chose to share.
  • The organization that gave you access. Your teacher, school, college or employer sees what its agreement with us allows, such as progress in a class it runs.
  • Parents and guardians. A parent or guardian can see and manage a child’s account.
  • Mentors and teachers. When you choose to work with a mentor or teacher, they see what they need to help you, and nothing more.
  • Service providers. Companies that run parts of the Services for us, such as cloud hosting, communications and security. They work under contract, use the information only to provide their service to us, and must keep it confidential and delete it when the work is done.
  • Safety and the law. When we believe it is needed to protect someone from serious harm, or when the law requires it. When the law allows, we tell you first.
  • If our organization changes. If United Education joins with or transfers its Services to another organization, your information stays protected by the promises in this policy, and we will tell you before anything changes.

We never sell personal information, and we never share it with advertisers or data brokers.

06Children

Many of our learners are children, and the law gives them special protection. In the United States, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) covers children under 13. We give every learner under 18 the strictest protections we have.

  • We collect personal information from a child under 13 only with a parent’s verifiable consent, or with a school’s authorization for use in school, for learning only.
  • From a child we collect only what learning needs: a first name or nickname, an age range, the child’s learning activity and, when the child speaks to the tutor, their voice.
  • A child can never be asked to give more information than an activity needs.
  • Children have no public profiles, see no advertising and cannot message strangers. Every person who works with a child through Village is checked first.
  • A parent can consent to us collecting a child’s information without consenting to any sharing with others.
  • A parent can review a child’s information, ask us to delete it, and stop further collection at any time by writing to privacy@unitededucation.org. When a school gave consent, the parent can also ask the school.

07Students and schools

When we provide the Services to a school or college, we act on its behalf. Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), we serve as a “school official”: we use student records only for the school’s educational purposes, under its direction, and as its agreement with us allows.

  • We never use student information for advertising, never sell it, and never build profiles of students for anything other than their learning.
  • When the agreement ends, we return or delete student information as the school directs, within 60 days.
  • Parents and eligible students can ask the school to see or correct student records. We help the school respond.

08Employers and public agencies

Some organizations run Liber Sovereign inside their own secure environment. There, the organization owns and controls the data, its own policy applies, and we see nothing unless it asks us for support.

When an employer or agency gives you access to a training program, it sees what the program needs, such as whether you completed required training. Anything more, such as your full Passport, it sees only if you choose to share it.

09How long we keep it

We keep information only as long as we need it for the purposes in this policy, then delete it.

  • Your account and learning record: for as long as your account is open. When you delete your account, we delete your information from our live systems within 30 days and from backups within 90 days. You can download your learning record first.
  • A child’s information: only as long as it is needed to teach the child. We delete it within 30 days when a parent or school asks, when a school’s agreement ends (within 60 days, as above), or after 12 months with no activity on the account.
  • Voice: we turn speech into text so the tutor can answer, then delete the recording right away, unless you choose to save it.
  • Safety records: up to 12 months, or longer only when needed to protect someone or meet a legal duty.
  • Device and usage logs: up to 12 months.
  • Messages with us: up to 24 months after your question is resolved.
  • De-identified and combined data: may be kept longer, because it cannot be linked back to you.

10How we protect it

Shield protects the Services on every layer. Information is encrypted in transit and at rest. Access is limited to the people who need it for their work, and every access is logged. We test our systems, including against attacks on AI, and train our team on privacy and security. We keep a written information security program.

No system is perfect. If a breach affects your information, we will tell you and the authorities as the law requires.

11Your choices and rights

Wherever you live, you can:

  • see the information we hold about you, and download your learning record in a format you can take anywhere;
  • correct information that is wrong;
  • delete your information or your whole account;
  • withdraw a permission you gave, such as sharing your Passport;
  • turn off the use of your de-identified data to improve our tutors (adults);
  • stop news messages.

Many of these choices are in your settings. For anything else, write to privacy@unitededucation.org. We answer within 30 days. We may need to confirm it is you before we act, and you can ask someone to act for you. Using your rights will never change the learning you get.

Residents of California and other states with privacy laws have these rights by law. We give them to everyone. If we turn down a request, you can ask us to look again, and if you are still not satisfied, you can contact your state attorney general.

Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control. We do not track you across other websites and we do not sell or share information for advertising, so there is nothing to opt out of. We still treat these browser signals as a request not to, and honor them.

12Cookies

We use a small number of cookies and similar tools to keep you signed in, remember your settings, keep the Services secure, and count how features are used in combined form on our own systems. We use no advertising cookies and no cross-site tracking. You can clear or block cookies in your browser, though signing in may then stop working.

13Learners outside the United States

United Education is based in the United States, and we process information in the United States and in countries where our service providers work, with the same protections. In some places, our products run on the learner’s own device or inside a local organization, and the information stays there.

If you are in the European Union or the United Kingdom, we use your information to provide the Services you asked for, for our legitimate interests in running and improving them safely, with your consent where we ask for it, and to meet legal duties. You also have the right to complain to your data protection authority. Where your local law gives you more rights than this policy, we honor them.

14Changes to this policy

When we change this policy, we will post the new version here and update the date at the top. If a change matters, we will tell you before it takes effect, and where the law requires, we will ask a parent’s consent again.
