Liber Edge: a free tutor on your own device

The tutor will live on the laptop or phone itself, so learning does not stop where the network ends.

A boy leans back laughing as the girl next to him points at what he just solved.

A tutor that needs a fast connection leaves out every learner who does not have one. In off-grid communities and crisis zones, the network ends long before the need to learn does.

Liber Edge is the free tier of Liber, our tutor. It is being built to run on the learner’s own laptop or phone, so the lessons and the tutor will work fully offline, at no cost.

What it will do

  • Run on the device. Every lesson, every course and the tutor will work with no internet at all.
  • Cost nothing. Free for every learner, on low-cost laptops and phones.
  • Teach the Liber way. It will ask before it tells, offer hints instead of answers, and teach in the learner’s own language.
  • Keep progress. Progress will save on the device and sync through Passport whenever a connection appears.

The idea behind it

We build for the weakest device first. If the tutor works on a low-cost laptop with no connection, it works for everyone. And because free only works if teaching costs very little, the tutor is designed to run on the device a learner already has.

How it fits

Liber Edge is planned as the tutor at home, at school and in the Field, and as the tutor inside Caravan, a whole school on a low-cost laptop. Read more on the Liber page.

Where it stands

Liber Edge is in development inside United Education. It is among the first releases on the release ledger, and it will go out when it is ready.
