Crossing Guard: the strictest safety rules, built for children

It will watch for anything that is wrong, and bring in a trained person when it is.

A crossing guard holds a girl’s hand as children run across a quiet street to school, a father and his toddler close behind.

Families trust us with their children. That trust has to hold everywhere a child learns: at the kitchen table, in class, and on a laptop far from any connection.

Crossing Guard is the safety layer in Grid. It is being built to keep people safe, with the strictest rules for children, and to bring in a trained person when something looks wrong.

What it will do

  • Set the strictest rules for children. In every product, online and offline.
  • Watch for harm. It is designed to look for signs that someone may be at risk.
  • Bring in a person. When something looks wrong, a trained person will be brought in.
  • Work offline. Its rules are meant to run on the device itself, even with no connection.

The idea behind it

Safety cannot be added at the end. Products for children should be built for them from the first line of code, and no automatic check should have the last word when someone may be at risk. Our commitment is to test safety before every release, and to keep testing after.

How it fits

Crossing Guard is planned for home, school and the Field. Inside SchoolOS, its rules are meant to apply everywhere. With Shield and Seal, it forms the three layers designed to protect everyone in every United product. Read more on the Grid page.

Where it stands

Crossing Guard is in development inside United Education. It will be released only when it is ready and its safety has been tested. Its turn will show on the release ledger.
