Line: the tutor by voice, on any phone

If you can make a call, you will be able to learn.

On a dirt road between fields, a grandfather plays a lesson on speaker as his granddaughter skips ahead, counting the answer on her fingers.

A great tutor should not depend on a laptop, a fast connection or even a screen. For many people, the one device they always have is a phone, and often a basic one.

Line is Liber, our tutor, by voice. It is being built so that anyone with a phone can learn by talking: a parent at the kitchen table, a nurse between calls, a child in a place the network barely reaches.

What it will do

  • Teach by voice. Lessons will happen in conversation, so there is nothing to read or install first.
  • Work on any phone. Letters and numbers on a basic phone, and practice between shifts on a smartphone.
  • Fit around a day. Short sessions on the way home, in a break or before bed.
  • Teach the Liber way. It will ask before it tells, offer a hint instead of the answer, and check that each idea stuck.

The idea behind it

The people who most need a patient tutor are often the hardest to reach. Line starts from the device they already carry. If the tutor can work through a phone call, it can reach almost everyone.

How it fits

Line is one of the forms Liber takes, next to Unbound in the browser and Caravan on a laptop with no connection. Read more on the Liber page.

Where it stands

Line is in development inside United Education. We are building it carefully and will release it when it is ready. When its turn comes, it will appear on the release ledger.
