Why we started United Education Labs

One question guides the lab: did the learner learn? Here is how we plan to answer it, in the open.

Two researchers lean over printed charts on a shared desk, one marking a curve in pencil.

Most learning products are measured by what is easy to count: time on screen, clicks, smiles. None of them tell you whether anyone learned anything.

We started United Education Labs to measure the one thing that matters. What can a person do now that they could not do before?

Learning is the measure

Every product we build will be judged by learning gains: what a person knew before, what they know after, and what they can do with it. A product that does not help people learn has not done its job.

Three tools

The lab is building three tools, and each will be released when it is ready.

  • Delta will be an open benchmark that measures how well AI tutors teach, by how much students learn. It rewards teaching, not answering.
  • Cohort will test tutors in two ways: on simulated students with real knowledge and real mistakes, at scale, and with panels of real students from around the world, of every age and background.
  • Proof will test every product against the research on learning, and run new studies where the research is missing.

Publish everything

Methods, data and results will be public, so anyone can check them and build on them. A measure that only we could run would only tell us what we hoped to hear.

Built on research, and adding to it

Decades of learning science already tell us a great deal about what works. Proof is meant to connect every product to that research, and where the answer is not known yet, to run the study and publish what we find.

Universities and research groups that want to study what works, in the open, can partner with the lab.
